The
group of former mining villages that make up the URBAN II Hetton
and Murton Community Initiative are situated in the North East Region
of England. Located to the south west of Sunderland the Initiative
area straddles the boundary between the City of Sunderland and County
Durham. It therefore straddles the boundary between the sub-regions
of Durham County and Tyne and Wear.
Three
Local Authorities have come together within the initiative. Durham
County Council, Easington District and the City of Sunderland are
at the heart of the Connecting the Coalfield Partnership.
With
a population
of
35,000
residents
the
communities
face
a mix
of
challenges.
The
collapse
of
the
local
primary industry through coal mine closures in the 1980’s
and early 1990’s and the isolation of these rural villages
have resulted in a particular set of circumstances that demand
focused
attention.
